Beaulieu Preparatory School community projects
The philosophy of the community projects programme at Beaulieu Preparatory School (BPS) is that each pupil will engage in meaningful initiatives that will enhance the broader, less fortunate community. Through such initiatives, the pupils will be enriched.
The community projects are voluntary and the aim is not to request money from pupils but to request assistance in providing easily accessible items to be shared within the community.
A community projects committee was established in 2012. This comprises of parents and staff members. There is a community service commitment required from each Grade Seven pupil. They are assisted by the community project committee should they wish to volunteer through the schools’ projects.
Mandela day: Multiple projects take place on Mandela day. These have included preparing, knitting or making play items for crèches, reading to the aged, donating old clothes and toys and making sandwiches. Each year’s new ideas are discussed and new projects are undertaken to ensure 67 minutes of meaningful contributions to the community.
Winter clothing/blanket collection: In May/June children are invited to bring blankets or winter clothes. On alternate years, we invite keen knitters to make beanies and scarves.
The Village Safe Haven: Shoes, stationery
Word in Motion in Diepsloot: Sandwiches, crèche training, winter, Easter and Christmas collections, shoes and stationery
Easter egg collection: Around Easter time, children are invited to donate marshmallow Easter eggs. These are distributed to Africa Food for Thought and other recipients.
Isinkwa “Bread for a Buddy”: Children are invited to bring an extra sandwich to school once a week to be distributed to a feeding scheme for vulnerable children in Diepsloot.
Lesego School (via Africa Food for Thought): Stationery, school visits, Easter eggs, books/shelves, crèche support
School shoe and stationery drive: At the final assembly of the year, children are invited to donate their old school shoes and socks. Boxes are placed throughout the school and teachers and pupils are invited to contribute shoes or excess stationery.
Christmas boxes: Children are invited to fill a Christmas box or bag with specific food, toys and personal items.
Berea Old Age Home: Volunteer visits and music
Ivory Park Community Centre: School visits, crèche support, sports equipment
Ark Animal Shelter: Volunteers assist with animals and other projects
